Motion Efficiency Study

Linda Brothwell’s work ‘Motion Efficiency Study’ is a permanent bronze sculpture which takes as its starting point the original balustrade of The Lantern building of the renowned Bristol Beacon building.

Through this work Brothwell explores how this seemingly static object might animate to twist and flow, responding to the sounds and actions that have happened around it throughout the life of the building.

These include such moments as when Elsie Howey hid in the venue’s organ to shout “Votes for Women” in 1909, the performers who waited outside a 2nd story external door to come on stage, and to Ella Fitzgerald’s performance in the hall in 1961.

Combining an interest in capturing sound in movement and working with exquisite detailing and colour, Brothwell draws on her training in metalwork and her interest in heritage and how objects hold memory to create her first UK permanent public commission.
